Functions of a/This Blog

September 17, 2009

Last week after I posted my blog entry ‘Fashion Label vs Music Label’ * on facebook, a friend of mine sincerely commented that such a long English article is not user-friendly [for non-native speakers of English] nowadays, and suggested I write a lite version of it.

His comment has led me to think about the appropriate length of my blog posts.

Indeed, whilst the advancement of technology has speeded up the flow of information, especially on the Internet, we are constantly bombarded with an awful lot of information every day, which forces us to become more selective, and even to change the ways we send and receive information.

Superstar DJ Dave Seaman, who’s also an active user on Twitter, in April decided to close down the message board on his official website, as he reckons,

‘Unfortunately, with the advent of Spacebook, MyFace and now Twitter, it seems the old fashioned Message Board has run it’s natural course, been swallowed up by progress and is going the way of 8 track recorders and Betamax video.’

Whilst the high speed of sharing/absorbing/ assimilating information is gaining more and more prominence – as shown by the simple and straight-forward mechanism of Twitter – shorter blog posts to a certain extent are logically more ‘user-friendly’.

+Nevertheless, sharing information is not the only function of my blog. I also want it to offer a reading experience that can slow down the tempo of the reader’s life for a little while.

Indeed, the length of my blog posts is closely related to their functions.

Recently I find reading books more and more enjoyable because as I spend a lot of time soaking in a sea of information for work and my blog every day, I feel the need for a space where I can slow down the pace and think reflectively but not reflexively for a while. Just a little while.

Here I’m not judging which of the 2 is better or prominent but it’s clear that I need them both.

I believe I’m not the only one so I want to create both ‘digestible’ and ‘meditative’ blog posts – ‘digestible’ and ‘meditative’ not only in terms of the materials themselves, but also the ways they are presented. And of course, the length of the blog posts will be one of the keys to the presentation.

For instance, when I write about news and CD reviews, the entries will be precise, straight-forward and informative; whilst when I compare cultural phenomena, especially with some application of theory, I will probe more deeply and wander around the boundaries between the theoretical and practical sides of the issues. But of course all this is subject to particular topics.

Hopefully none of my blog posts here will be too long for anybody :D

Thx for reading!
